The
Delaware County Christian School elementary campus comprises
grades Pre-K through 5, and is housed separately on eight
acres on Bishop Hollow Road in Newtown Square. The elementary
school
offers
a friendly, controlled, and safe atmosphere, where God’s
goodness and grace is transparently evidenced within the
hearts and countenance
of the children and staff.
With its current enrollment of approximately 330 students,
the school’s elementary division provides
an e xceptional
Christ-centered academic program designed to meet the spiritual
and developmental needs of students in these early grades.
The curriculum is designed to support the school’s
mission to educate students who will serve God and impact
the world through biblical thought and action.
There are approximately
30 faculty members serving at the elementary school with
an average of 16 years of teaching
experience. Most teachers have also completed a master’s
program in a related field of education. The average class
size is 19 students.
To enhance the learning environment, the school offers three
sections of each grade level from first through fifth along
with two kindergarten classes
that have full-day and half-day
options. DC also has a 5-day and 3-day Pre-Kindergarten program.
All classrooms at the elementary campus are self-contained,
whereby teachers instruct in the basic content areas of
math, reading, histor y,
and science. The three fifth grade classrooms use a team
approach for instruction in reading, language arts, social
studies and science. In addition to a special weekly
chapel service, students also have Bible class daily to
provide instruction focusing on specific books, Bible characters,
and topics from scripture. Bible time is practically related
to the child’s age of understanding thereby assisting
them in their efforts to grow in relationship with Jesus
Christ and their fellow classmates and teachers.
Although
traditional in nature, classroom teachers utilize various
instructional methods such as ability and mixed-ability
grouping, interest groups, discovery and inquiry, hands-on
investigation and research. The elementary campus ma intains
its own computer lab.
Special subject areas taught to elementary
students include physical education, art, music, library,
computer applications and Spanish (for grades 2-5). The
Discovery Center provides services
for students including educational
therapy, resource rooms and enrichment classes.
