       Honors & AP Criteria  
 
 

English - Mr. Thom Houghton, Chair

Honors English (Grades 9, 10, 11, & 12)
AP English (Grade 12)

English 9 Honors
Students in 8th grade who wish to apply for Honors English 9 must have an A- average for the year in English 8 and be recommended by their 8th grade English teacher.

English 10 and 11 Honors
Students will be chosen for honors English courses by consensus of English department teachers on the basis of:

  • First semester minimum grade average of 88% for students currently in Honors English and 93% for students currently in regular English
  • Teacher recommendation
  • Successful performance of 70% or better on a required grammar test (9th grade applicants for 10th Honors only)

Note: "Borderline" students may also be asked to submit a timed writing assignment.

12th Grade Honors and AP English
Students will be selected for these classes based upon the following criteria:

  • First semester average of 90% for students currently enrolled in Honors English and 93% for students in regular English
  • Teacher recommendation
  • Submission of special application to either AP English 12 or Honors English 12 instructor

Accelerated Sequence

  • Freshmen who earned a B or better in 8th Honors Geometry are automatically enrolled in 9th grade Honors Algebra II, which is the first course in the Accelerated sequence.
  • Students in this sequence who meet all grade prerequisites* will continue their program as follows - Classes of 2008, 2009, and 2010: 10th - Hon Algebra II, 11th - Math Analysis, 12th - AP Calculus or Discrete Math; Class of 2011 and beyond: 10th - Math Analysis, 11th - Hon Probability and Statistics (1/2) and Intro to Calculus (1/2), 12th - AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics.

Honors Sequence

  • Freshmen who earned a B or better in Honors Algebra I (section I) are automatically enrolled in Honors Geometry, which is the first course in the Honors sequence.
  • Students in this sequence who meet all grade prerequisites* will continue the program as follows - Classes of 2008 and 2009: 10th - Hon Geometry, 11th - Hon Algebra II, 12th - Math Analysis or Discrete Math; Class of 2010 and beyond: 10th - Hon Algebra II, 11th - Math Analysis, 12th - Hon Probability and Statistics (1/2) and Intro to Calculus (1/2).

Students who wish to move up to the Honors Sequence or students in the Honors Sequence who wish to move up to the Accelerated Sequence need to meet with the department chair prior to May 1st to determine their eligibility and to discuss acceptable summer course work.

Honors Biology (Grade 9)
Accelerated Chemistry (Grade 10)
Honors Chemistry (Grade 10)
AP Chemistry (Grades 11 & 12)
AP Physics (Grades 11 & 12)
Honors Physics (Grades 11 & 12)

All Science Courses

  • Students entering grades 9-10 will be placed in courses by the science department. Selection criteria for each course are listed in its course description on the school website. At course registration time, each student must bring the registration form to his or her current science teacher, who will mark the correct course.
  • Students entering grades 11 and 12 must sign up for the science electives they would like to take. Sign up sheets will be posted in room 212 (chemistry classroom). At course registration time, each student must bring the registration form to his or her current science teacher, who will mark the course(s) for which the student has been approved.

Social Studies - Dr. McFarland, Chair

Honors World History I, II
Honors United States History
Honors American Government/Economics
AP United States History
AP European History

An application is required and may be obtained from Dr. McFarland. Also considered are:

  • Standardized test scores (ERB, PSAT, SAT)
  • Previous class performance in history and English
  • A positive, willing spirit to be challenged
  • Good writing, reading and analytical thinking skills
  • Consistently high grades in previous social studies classes (91% minimum)

Foreign Languages - Dr. MacDonald, Chair

Honors German I, II, III, IV
AP German
Honors Spanish I, II, III, IV
AP Spanish

  • A" in middle school foreign language
  • Input of middle school teachers as to academic ability
  • Demonstrated willingness to speak in class before peers
  • Demonstration of analytical and conceptual abilities (strong in math)
  • First year students will be reevaluated according to performance throughout the year
  • Transfer students may be placed by interview with the respective modern language teacher

Bible - Mr. David Smith, Chair

Honors Revelation (Grades 11 & 12)

  • An application is required and may be obtained from Mr. Davis.
  • Good performance in previous Bible classes
  • A sincere desire to undertake serious Bible Study
  • Good writing and analytical skills
  • Strong performance in English and history classes
