1996

In the spring of 1992 I sat in the living room of my Canton Mississippi trailer. A manila letter in my hand informed me that I was accepted as a member of the faculty at the Stony Brook School where I had been a boarding student, a football player, a wrestler, a runner and a dreamer. It was then that I gave up the weary work of being an individual and surrendered to the many names in my past who gently beckoned me to take up the mantle of a teacher. The names: Fred Jordan, John Kenney, Lyle Dorset, Roger Lundin, Joe McClatchey, Leland Ryken, Jerry Root, and most fondly C. James Favino (my father) . All of them teachers, which I am now today. The names are the puzzle pieces that explain who I am. My present loves, choices and passions are not merely my own desires but responses to those exhilarating moments of discovery and victory brought on by and shared with these titans from my past. Their beliefs, their rhetorical manner, their passions that I observed as a student and now mimic as a teacher, are the very words which make up the book of my life.
