Music has been part of my life as long as I can remember...one of my earliest memories is my dad playing lullabies for my sister and I each night. So it seems natural that when I was in first grade and wanted to learn to sing like Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music, my parents said...take piano first. I added clarinet in 5th grade and it became my main instrument quickly. I majored in music education at the University of Michigan studying clarinet with David Shifrin and Brian Schweikhardt and playing in the renowned Michigan bands under the directorship of H. Robert Reynolds and Carl St. Clair. Teaching at DC has allowed me to teach a subject I love in an environment that supports my faith. I am married to George, a wonderfully supportive non-musician, and am parent to two adult children, DC alumni from 2006 and 2009, whose own music education continues to influence their lives today.

Teaching is the thing I believe I do best, and it is the thing I most enjoy doing. I have known that I loved it from the time I stood in front of my pretend class teaching lessons as a child. I love it when the light bulb comes on for a student, when a student has worked hard and has mastered a challenge, and when my passion for what we are studying sparks a flicker of interest in a young mind. I teach music because I believe deeply in the value of instrumental music study both as an academic pursuit and as a conduit to experiences such as identifying and expressing emotion, analyzing problems to find solutions, working individually toward a goal of personal improvement and collaborating as a team member to build a whole.
