Exploring how various disciplines connect and influence thinking has become a driving force in my life. My professional pursuits reflect this. During the Cold War, I was able to spend three summers in East Bloc countries studying languages. Being able to communicate with people in their own language gained me a rare insight into the issues they faced. I was encouraged by Christians who were content to accept reprisals as they practiced their faith. I was humbled by the fact that I could encourage them in their faith. Although I am most proficient in German, my time in the East Bloc led me to choose Russian as my second language for my Doctorate of Modern Languages from Middlebury College. I have had a diverse academic path: Houghton College to Villanova University and finally, Middlebury. In addition, I have spent years studying in Germany, Austria and the former Soviet Union.

In teaching, I enjoy seeing the spark in students' eyes when they make a leap in their thinking or suddenly 'see' something that they have never thought about before. These students then pass on this understanding to fellow students creating a domino effect in the classroom. Another language requires the learner to think differently and to get one's head inside another culture. As students prepare to leave DC for college, those who have faithfully studied German have acquired the ability to survive independently in a second language. It is very satisfying to know that I have given them something that will continue to enrich their lives.

As a language teacher at DC, I can teach virtually any subject in the target language. This uniquely enables me to incorporate history, philosophy, Christianity, some science and the Arts in my German classes. I am a whole person teaching the whole student. One of my favorite questions from students is: 'Are we having a life lesson now?' There is no better place to prepare students for life.

My go-to movies are often international films, and the books I read very eclectic. I am also intensely interested in the Arts. As a student, I was heavily involved in music and maintain this interest by working with a non-profit chamber music camp. We enable students who come from poorer backgrounds to attend camp with students who come from more wealthy backgrounds. Helping students understand different perspectives and expand their view of the world is very rewarding.
