Other Information

As a graduate of DC I have appreciated the opportunity to serve a school that meant so much to me as I was growing up. I have taught 2nd Grade through middle school. I like new teaching experiences and learning to relate to different age groups. I now teach 7th Grade English and Bible and continue to enjoy learning new skills and interacting with my students. I appreciate how they impact my life and continually impress me with their abilities, their sense of humor and those times when they reveal they are thinking more deeply about life and their faith. I like to think of teaching as both an art and a craft. I continue to work at developing what I am teaching; I like to try different methods and seek to make my classroom a place in which my students can not only grow in their learning but also grow in their faith and in their application of what they have learned.

I believe God was calling me to be a teacher when I was in High School at DC. I had gone to summer camp for many summers at that point. I remember my principal telling me I should try being a camp counselor at the camp he directed. I went on to spend seven summers there working with kids. I loved the opportunity to impact their lives and experience all the fun and crazy things of summer camp together. I did not pursue a teaching degree in college. However it was while working as a Youth and Family worker for an inner city mission serving some of the kids I had worked with at camp that I followed through on God's calling and got certified to teach. Soon after that I began my career at DC.

I have taught elementary school and middle school for many years. During those years one of my greatest joys has been to help my students develop their creative writing abilities. I love teaching students to be creative writers whether writing short stories or poetry. I work to help them move from mundane and commonplace plots and topics to thinking more deeply about what they want to write. Every year I am amazed and blessed by the creativity they display.

I am happily married to my supportive and encouraging wife Gwen. We enjoy being new grandparents . When not teaching or grading papers I enjoy being outdoors whether gardening, hiking or playing golf.
