David Horton began Indy Photo Coach in 2008 to meet what he perceived to be a need in the market. Many consumers are now purchasing high-end digital camera equipment but only use that equipment in the automatic setting due to a learning curve gap, he told the judges.
"We are a unique photography school that's been in business for over a year," Horton said. A former biology major at Taylor and a pharmaceutical salesman by day, Horton said he's been developing his business slowly for the past year, using instructors on a contract basis to offer basic and advanced photography lessons in individual and small-scale classes, all set in an outdoor, subject-rich atmosphere. "The difference (from the competition) is a small class size and unique environment," he said. After learning of his victory, Horton said he plans to use the seed money to help grow the business. He plans to hire his instructors as full-time employees and to look to expand outside of the Indianapolis market, possibly in Columbus or Cincinnati. "By the end of the year, we hope to be advancing to another location," he said. To learn more about the business, log on to www.indyphotocoach.com.
