Happy Birthday, DC!
By Anna Classon ’21
On Friday, January 10, the Advancement Office organized a surprise event on both of DC’s campuses to celebrate the 75th Anniversary, coinciding with approximately the 75th day of school. Students from PK-12 joined in the celebration of DC’s “birthday party” in several special ways.
Lower school students were given party hats and a special DC coloring page. Teachers read their classrooms the story about the school’s origin and how a group of parents taught kindergarten through 5th grade in church basements until they were blessed with the space to create the DC we know and love today. Some of the students even sang the school a heartfelt “Happy Birthday.” Read “The Story of DC” here!
However, the fun didn’t end there. On the Upper Campus, students and faculty were invited to enjoy an ice cream sundae bar or water ice, giving them the opportunity to have fellowship with one another and take a break from their day to reflect on all God has done for the school. After everyone enjoyed their sweet treats, the student body split into two teams for a DC-themed Family Feud-style competition, middle school students competing against upper school students. Athletic Director, Kevin Wallace, played host, and occasionally stumped the excited students with questions such as “Can you name athletic coaches from DC who are also DC alumni?” and “What are the most popular hot lunches served at DC?” (The answer: pasta bar!) The two teams were neck and neck until the very end when upper school students won the last question, earning themselves a dress-down day on Monday.
These events allowed students and faculty on both campuses to have fun celebrating the milestone year while also allowing time to give thanks to the Lord for all of the opportunities He has created for the DC community over the last 75 years.
