Senior Reflections: Chess Club
Senior Reflections with Emma Chung

By: Emma Chung, Class of 2021

The best part of DC is the community we have with each other within our school. Whether someone is in need of help or could use encouragement, there’s always countless people ready and willing to help.

There’s also a lot of community, not just specifically with the families of DC, but throughout the student body itself. I remember when I was in third grade, about 10 years old, I started attending Chess Club after school. The great thing about the Chess Club was it was for all skill levels and it was a group of kids that normally would not be put together. It was a great mix of kids, from all different grades, some who played sports, some who were more into music, etc. It was a great opportunity for me to connect and become friends with new people that I wouldn’t have even known if it wasn’t for the Chess Club. We came together with the common interest of playing the game. Now as an 18 year old in my senior year, I have found my way back to this Chess Club community. It has been about seven years since I’ve been a part of the Chess Club and it still has some of the same kids from when we were in elementary school. On Wednesday afternoons we come together and play a game that we all love as a nice break in our busy weeks. We are able to laugh, relax and just hang out, all while enjoying the thought-provoking, strategic, and fun game of chess.

To me the Chess Club embodies what the DC community is; a group of people from many different walks of life that all come together for the same goal and interest. In the big picture that interest is to gain an education, while learning how to live a life pleasing to the Lord.
