How Mission, Vision, and Values Shape Top Christian Schools

Discover how our core commitments help your child grow in godly wisdom.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” — Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)

At Delaware County Christian School (DC), we believe this passage of Scripture captures the connection between reverent devotion to God and our passionate commitment to learning. This deep conviction shapes who we are and all we do.

In 1950, 58 children were sent by their parents to a fledgling elementary school in a church basement. These families probably didn’t realize they were starting what would become one of the top Christian schools, not only in the Philadelphia region but also in Pennsylvania, and even beyond. For them, raising their children in “the fear of the Lord” by providing a Christ-centered education was motive enough to start a school.

More than six decades later, we still find that same motive more than sufficient. Our mission, vision, and values emerge from it. We believe faith and education, or spiritual formation and academic excellence, belong together. We unapologetically declare that true knowledge of ourselves and our world comes only along with the knowledge we gain of the Holy One, whom we must love and serve with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind.

The Mission of Delaware County Christian School

Values Shape Top Christian SchoolsOur Mission: To educate students who will serve God and impact the world through biblical thought and action.

Jesus Christ came not to be served but to serve, and the best Christian schools keep service at their mission’s core.

We weren’t surprised when the Cardus Education Survey—widely recognized as “the most significant representative benchmark of non-public school academic, cultural, and spiritual outcomes”—found that religious schools, negative stereotypes notwithstanding, “are not creating citizens who are particularly separatist, uninvolved in civic life, and unable or unwilling to participate in a pluralistic public square.” On the contrary: they graduate young people who care about and serve their larger community.

At DC, we teach our students that serving neighbors is a crucial way to serve God. As Jim Favino, a member of our Upper School English Department, explains, a Christian student “understands the real consequences of their actions, and then acts in a way that will bring true help and relief to those around them.”

And it’s true. We are proud to say that our students act for their neighbors’ benefit long after leaving our classrooms. So many of our alumni contribute to the common good as Christ’s representatives, continuing to fulfill DC’s mission of service and godly impact, whatever their sphere of influence may be.

When your child attends DC, they receive an education that empowers them to make a difference in the world and for others in Christ’s name.

Delaware County Christian School's Vision

Delaware County Christian School (DC) is an exemplary educational institution in the greater Philadelphia area, providing a comprehensive PreK-12 college preparatory education that is grounded in the Word of God. Firmly rooted in Christian community, DC seeks to continue building rigorous, innovative programs in academics, the arts and athletics. The school provides students a liberal arts education, engaging the mind and body as well as developing leaders who are equipped to impact the world for Christ. Moreover, DC aspires to be an institutional leader and model for schools both nationwide and globally.

At DC, we aim for excellence in all we do. We welcome external validations of our accomplishments, including our Exemplary Accreditation status from the Association of Christian Schools International—a distinction less than 2% of the ACSI’s member list of 1000 accredited Christian schools can claim. We are also fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, meeting all their high standards and adhering to all their best practices. But we pursue excellence because only our best efforts honor God and benefit your child.

When your child attends DC, they will find intellectual challenge and spiritual nourishment in an excellent Christian liberal arts education—what Dr. Paul J. Maurer, president of Montreat College, calls “the best education available to humanity,” one fostering “the formation of the whole person.”

Delaware County Christian School's Core Values

DC’s values are hallmarks of biblical faith and reflect our grounding in God’s Word:

  • Rooted in Christ: All we do, teach, and learn is rooted in Christ. Your child will discover how learning supports and strengthens faith in the God of all truth.

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” —Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV)

  • Scholarship: We cultivate our God-given intellects and become passionate, lifelong learners. Your child will expand their horizons, becoming a good steward of curiosity, reason, and wonder.

“An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” —Proverbs 18:15 (ESV)

  • Excellence: Doing everything to the Glory of God compels us to excellence. Your child will strive to do and give their best always, in gratitude to God.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” —Colossians 3:17 (ESV)

  • Community: Our diverse community values partnership, collaboration and strong personal relationships. Your child will forge lasting friendships and learn how to work productively and peacefully with others.

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” —Psalm 133:1 (ESV)

  • Servanthood: As servant-leaders, we recognize our calling to influence culture for good. Your child will represent Christ by humbly doing good for other people.

“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” —Mark 9:35 (ESV)

  • Impact: Reasoning critically and acting biblically, we are equipped to impact the world for Christ. Your child will assume responsibility for bearing witness to Christ in compelling ways.

“...let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” —Matthew 5:15 (ESV)
