Other Information

I first became excited about mathematics in my 9th grade geometry course when I was introduced to proofs. Finally, mathematics moved from being calculation-oriented to thinking-oriented. I was hooked. Mathematics became my favorite course every year thereafter.

As the eldest two of my three children were ready to start school, I took a part-time teaching job at the Christian school where I had registered them in Delaware. Since the school was just adding on high school grades for the first time, I had the unique opportunity to build that school's high school mathematics program from scratch. I also started a school mathematics team and became active in the Delaware State Mathematics League, eventually taking over as head of the state secondary league for 5 years.

After completing a degree in secondary mathematics education at West Chester University (where I met my wonderful husband), I earned a Master's degree in pure mathematics at the University of Delaware. My first teaching job was a part-time position at West Chester University. I taught 21 years at Wilmington Christian School in Delaware while also completing a few years as a part-time calculus instructor at the University of Delaware.

Since coming to DC in 1998 I have enjoyed both teaching mathematics and restructuring the mathematics curriculum here. My goal is to keep our students fully focused on the concepts involved in the procedures they are doing, so that all of their mathematics is thinking-oriented.

At home I love to cook, bake, garden, and spend time with grandchildren. Happily, my grandchildren like to work with me in both the kitchen and the garden. I particularly enjoy being able to make a meal with all the vegetables and greens cut fresh from the garden. Living out among the Amish farms, I am also able to buy fresh Amish-grown vegetables and fruits that I can or freeze for the winter.
