The Board of Trustees in conjunction with the Head of School Search Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Steinfield as DC’s Head of School effective July 1, 2019. Dan will be the fifth individual to serve in this capacity since the school’s founding in 1950.
Dan currently serves as President of Jupiter Christian School in Jupiter, Florida. He previously served as Head of School of West Shore Christian Academy in Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania.
During Dan’s tenure at both Jupiter Christian School and West Shore Christian Academy, both institutions realized substantial enrollment increases. At Jupiter Christian School, Dan was instrumental in the completion of several significant capital projects, including a major gym renovation, a 20-year lease of a property to house the school’s Global Education and Business Service Center, and the acquisition of a second campus that serves 2-year old’s through first grade students.
Dan’s appointment as DC’s new Head of School represents a homecoming for him, his wife Kim, and their two sons Andrew and Kyle. For 16 years, Dan served at DC in a variety of roles, including Director of Student Ministries and Outreach, founder and director of DC’s summer programs, middle school teacher, and K-12 Social Studies coordinator.
In anticipation of his return to DC, Dan notes “I am humbled and deeply blessed for this extraordinary opportunity, and for the trust and confidence of DC’s Board of Trustees and Head of School Search Committee. DC’s commitment to creating a godly community where young men and women can grow, flourish, and reach beyond themselves on behalf of Christ has been the hallmark of the school since its founding 68 years ago. It is the work of generations and I look forward to helping steward and deepen this work. Kim and I are honored and excited to rejoin this vibrant community and to collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and students.”
A visionary servant leader who succeeds at team and community building, the enhancement of Christ-centered curriculum, and innovation in education, Dan graduated from Messiah College with a BA in History. He also holds an MA from Immaculata University in Educational Leadership and Administration. He has earned certifications from the Association of Christian Schools International as a superintendent and has served as an accreditation chair. Dan is also a Van Lunen Fellow having completed the program offered by Calvin College on Executive Management in 2015-2016.
Dan’s appointment is the result of an extensive search led by the Head of School Search Committee with the assistance of Jim Adare Consulting, a missional Christian school search consultant, as well as invaluable input from the broader DC community during our strategic planning process last year and the candidate interview process this fall.
The Search Committee was charged with finding a Head of School who would embrace a number of leadership and personal qualifications important to DC’s mission and future, including:
- A committed Christian with a mature and sustaining faith.
- A willingness to live out his or her faith in ways that reflect positively upon the school.
- A servant leader whose leadership style embraces a biblical worldview that informs all decision making.
- Strong administrative and organizational-management skills.
- An approachable, hands-on, collaborative leader with excellent interpersonal skills who is both a consensus-builder and an effective decision-maker.
- Strategic thinking and planning with follow-through and accountability.
- The ability and willingness to lead and participate in both internal and external advancement efforts.
- The ability to relate and work across cultures to create an inclusive environment in a diverse community.
The members of the Search Committee and the Board of Trustees believe they have found this Head of School in Dan Steinfield and are thrilled to welcome Dan and his family back to DC.
Dr. George McFarland to Continue His Ministry at DC
The Board of Trustees also is extremely grateful to Dr. George McFarland whose godly service over the past year as DC’s Interim Head of School has been instrumental in uniting our school community during this time of transition.
Dr. McFarland will continue to serve as Interim Head of School through June, 2019 and will continue his ministry at DC after that time. He will work with Dan Steinfield in the coming months to define his new responsibilities. “For more than 40 years, George has been a critical component to DC’s success in inspiring students to influence the world through biblical thought and action,” Dan said. “He has been a dear friend and mentor to me and so many others in the DC community. We all stand on the shoulders of godly-servant leaders like George. I am looking forward to hearing his advice, insights, and wisdom as we move forward.”
Commenting on Dan’s appointment and his future role at DC, George said: “It has been a tremendous blessing to have led DC in my current capacity as Interim Head of School. Dan’s appointment as our next long-term Head of School is a true gift from God, and I am delighted that the long tradition of having godly-servant leaders in the Head of School position will continue at DC. Dan has tremendous energy for the Lord and is a visionary leader whom I believe will grow DC. I look forward to continuing to serve the Lord at DC and helping Dan and Kim make a smooth transition back to DC.”
In the next few months, Dan, George, and the Board of Trustees will work together to establish a plan and goals to support a smooth transition. While Dan’s official duties will not begin until July 1st, he will be visiting campus in the coming months to work with George and meet with faculty, staff, and other members of the DC community to prepare for the transition.
Please be remembering Dan and his family and the entire school community as we move through this time of transition leading up to July 1.
