Upper School
Whether a student is an accomplished and gifted artist or someone just learning the basics, our outstanding visual arts program will provide an opportunity for him or her to grow and develop in a variety of mediums. Our students are given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of artistic media in a fluid curricular environment. The scope of the program includes painting, drawing, sculpting, fibers, graphic design, jewelry, photography, computer graphics, and pottery. Our students have received numerous awards at recent art shows including multiple first place ribbons and best of show awards. Recent graduates have received scholarships to continue their studies at Rhode Island School of Design, Tyler School of Art, SCAD, Moore College or Art, and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Many of our art alumni are now successful career artists sharing their faith-enriched talents.
Middle School
Middle School art classes at DC help students recognize God as the Creator and themselves as sub-creators who are created in His image with the ability to appreciate and cultivate goodness, truth, and beauty. Students gain a foundational understanding that we carry on God's act of creation in our human way by creating with what He has made, to witness and worship through the visual arts.
Our curriculum builds skills in 2D and 3D disciplines while fostering creativity and curiosity. It teaches students to integrate connections to the broad scope of God's world through deep reflection, constructive critique, and exploration of art spanning the globe through discussion and art history.
Lower School
Picasso stated that “Every child is an artist.” The Lower School art curriculum at Delaware County Christian School encourages students to be visual thinkers and creative problem solvers, enabling the students to develop skills for advancement in the realm of technology. Students learn visual literacy through art history, art theory, aesthetics, art appreciation, and criticism, as well as the creative process. At the elementary level solid technical studio skills are explored through a wide range of materials, including drawing, painting, pastels, sponging, marbling, sculpture, metals, wood, and pottery.
Art is a reflection of God’s creation and expresses that beauty through the creative process. Art at the Lower School allows students to enjoy God’s creation and interpret and evaluate life experiences in a way that fosters character for the future of every child.
ECC
As God’s image bearers, the human act of artistic expression reflects God’s creative nature. Students in the ECC do this through a variety of mediums and processes including drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, and sculpture. These projects are integrated with other disciplines from each grade including Bible, social studies, and science. The elements of art will be committed to memory and provide a framework for understanding and creating works of art. They include line, color theory, shape (2D), form (3D), value, texture, and space. Students will also study master artists and practice skills with inspiration from masterworks. Students will express themselves creatively through process-focused art while developing fine motor skills and learning to manipulate new materials. There will be several fun opportunities to exhibit artwork throughout the year that include the Explore! Night Art Show in the spring. Take joy in the beauty of your child’s artwork, know that their efforts are made beautiful because they reflect what our Creator called “good.”
